Overview

With around 90,000 students, Bologna is one of Italy’s largest universities, with campuses beyond Bologna in Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini and a centre in Buenos Aires. It holds a strong academic tradition in nearly every field — law, medicine, engineering, economics, literature and the social sciences above all.

Ranked among Italy’s highest in the international tables, the university draws international students at master’s and doctoral level above all, on its research intensity and storied history. Erasmus and double-degree programmes are common too.

The city of Bologna and student life

The capital of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna is a student city in the fullest sense; a large part of its population is tied to the university. It sits at the centre of northern Italy, close by rail to the Milan-Florence-Venice line. Housing costs are more balanced than Milan and Rome, and the social life runs quite lively.

Faculties and signature programmes

Bologna covers many fields under an 11-faculty/school structure. The fields Turkish students often turn to:

• Engineering and architecture (computing, automotive, biomedical included),
• Medicine and surgery, pharmacy and health sciences,
• Law and economics-management (many English-taught programmes),
• Literature, language and cultural sciences, politics and international relations.

The university stands out with many English-taught master’s (Laurea Magistrale) programmes; these open the door to apply without an Italian requirement.

Language of instruction and language conditions

Programmes run in Italian or English. Italian-taught ones generally want a B2 CILS/CELI certificate or the university’s language exam; English-taught ones expect an IELTS/TOEFL result. Settling your programme’s language early determines which language certificate to prepare.

Application for Turkish students

The process begins with choosing the fitting programme and continues with the pre-enrolment on Universitaly. A CIMEA report or a Dichiarazione di Valore from the consulate is needed for the degree recognition. At this stage the sworn Italian translation of your diploma and transcript must stand ready.

Tuition fees and scholarships

At Bologna the fees are tiered by the ISEE value showing the family’s income and assets; low-income students can be largely exempted. Beside this, the regional grant agency ER.GO (Emilia-Romagna DSU) provides housing, canteen and cash support. Which documents should you have sworn-translated for the University of Bologna?

Applying to the University of Bologna (or to a programme in the same city), most documents issued in Turkey need a sworn Italian translation. The most-translated documents in master’s, doctoral and bachelor’s applications:

• The diploma (bachelor’s/master’s) and, where applicable, the provisional graduation certificate,
• The transcript and the diploma supplement,
• The course contents (where a recognition/compatibility assessment is needed),
• The income and financial documents (for the DSU grant and the ISEE Parificato),
• The statement of intent, CV and references (in Italian or English, by the programme’s language).
