What are the birth and marriage certificates?

The birth certificate shows the person’s birth details, the marriage certificate the spouses’ marriage record. The registry offices can also issue these in a multilingual international form (formula A/B); but the Italian authority can still want a sworn Italian translation and an apostille.

What is it needed for in an Italian application?

It is asked for to prove kinship in family reunion (ricongiungimento familiare), spouse/child residence, residence through marriage and some DSU applications. The birth-certificate translation is used in the recognition of dual-national children in Italy too.

Where and how do you get the document?

Obtain the documents from a Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs or via e-Devlet. Though international-formula documents are accepted without an apostille in some countries, an apostille and a sworn translation are the safe road in Italian procedures. The apostille is taken through the Governorate.

The apostille and sworn-translation process

Take the document, have it apostilled, then have the notarised sworn Italian translation made from the apostilled version. Because the authority can want a separate sworn translation even for the multilingual formula A/B documents, verifying the application requirement in advance saves time.

What to watch in the sworn translation

The names must match the passport spelling exactly; the date and place details (place of birth, place of marriage) must carry over completely. If you are divorced or widowed, a current document showing the marital status (an extract with events or a court decision) can be needed too.

Frequently asked questions

With an international birth certificate, is a translation required?

The Italian authority most often wants a sworn Italian translation and an apostille; the multilingual formula document may not suffice on its own. Confirm the requirement with the applying authority.

Where can I get my marriage certificate?

Regardless of where the marriage took place, it can be obtained from any registry office or via e-Devlet; take a certified extract for official use.

Is my child’s birth certificate needed too?

In family-reunion and child-residence procedures, yes; each child’s birth certificate is apostilled and sworn-translated separately.

Keeping it current

Document formats, apostille/certification authorities and application requirements can change over time. Before starting the process, verify the relevant consulate’s or institution’s current requirements from the official source.
