What kind of institution is it?

IUSS is not a traditional university but a select higher school. Undergraduate students are enrolled at the University of Pavia while winning IUSS’s honours programme by a competitive exam; the institution also has strong doctoral programmes.

Very small and elite with around 300 students, IUSS concentrates on interdisciplinary fields such as risk reduction, bioengineering, cognitive sciences and the human sciences.

In Lombardy, Pavia is a classic student city with its historic colleges and campus culture. Its closeness to Milan is an advantage; IUSS students live a strong community experience through the college system.

Admission and selection

Admission rests on a selective competitive process and an academic assessment. There can be a separate assessment for international candidates; the places are limited.

Fees, housing and scholarship

For the admitted students the education is free and financial support (allowance, housing contribution) is provided. IUSS thus offers a merit-based, supported education.

Language of instruction

At undergraduate level the teaching is in Italian; the doctorate and the research are largely in English. Italian proficiency is needed for the undergraduate level; English is expected for the doctorate.
