What does the research award cover?

MAECI’s research component supports a fixed-term research period run under the supervision of an Italian university or recognised research institution — generally aimed at doctoral-level or post-doctoral researchers, and different from a full degree programme: the aim is working with an Italian group on a defined topic. The reach matters to researchers deepening an academic career, working with a particular expert or laboratory, or doing part of a thesis in Italy. The component’s exact limits — and which researcher profiles qualify — sit in each year’s bando.

Who can qualify?

The research route is generally open to candidates with a strong academic record who can define a research project and find an Italian supervisor or institution to receive them. Turkish citizenship and residence outside Italy are the base conditions. What decides most on this road is the persuasive, well-defined research proposal — the problem, the method, and which Italian group you’d work with and why, set out clearly; and an acceptance or invitation from the host institution strengthens the application substantially.

Why the proposal matters

In research applications, the file’s heart is the proposal. A good one holds an original, realistic problem, the tie to the current literature, a workable method and a concrete link to the Italian host group. Citing the target group’s publications, and saying why that institution in particular, sends the “I’ve truly studied you, and I fit” message — the targeted, concrete proposal always beats the generic one. The documents and the language

The core file: the academic documents (diploma, transcript and their sworn translations), the CV, the publication list, the research proposal and — where held — the host’s acceptance/invitation letter. The language follows the working environment: many research settings run in English, though Italian eases the daily and academic life; and where the degree’s recognition is needed, CIMEA or the DoV steps in. The translations prepared in advance speed the application and the enrolment both.

The researcher’s strategy

How do you find the supervisor?

The route’s most critical step is finding the Italian supervisor or group to receive you. First identify the Italian academics and groups working in your field; read their publications and see where their work meets yours. Then make contact with a short, tight introduction — the research idea, and why them. The concrete, targeted approach is what wins the positive reply; and a supervisor’s interest strengthens the application and makes the Italian period productive at once.

The length, the rights and the practicalities

Research periods run fixed-term, with the coverage set by the bando; through the period the award aims at supporting the living, with the housing, the insurance and the other rights following the call’s conditions. Settled in Italy, the first steps are the codice fiscale, the residence application and — where needed — the bank account. To make the period productive, fix a clear working plan with the host group from the start: the goals, the outputs, the timeline. That clarity is the short period’s highest academic yield.

After the research

The Italian research period can be a real springboard: the connections built can become the joint publications, a doctorate or the post-doctoral collaborations ahead. Read the period, then, not as output production alone but as the chance to build long academic relationships — and the results and experience at its end are the strong reference behind the future applications. The research award and the doctorate
