What is AFAM, and what does it cover?

AFAM (Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e Coreutica) is Italy’s official system of higher art, music and dance education — taking in the fine-arts academies (the Accademia di Belle Arti), the state conservatoires (music), the design schools (ISIA) and the dance and theatre academies. AFAM institutions grant academic degrees equivalent to the universities’: their diplomas are recognised at bachelor’s and master’s level. For Turkish students in art, music, design or the performing arts, AFAM stands beside the universities as a strong option — and with MAECI valid for these programmes too, the art-minded student shouldn’t pass the scholarship by.

Who is MAECI open to, for AFAM?

At AFAM level, the scholarship is aimed at internationals holding — or seeking — admission to a higher-level programme (generally master’s-equivalent) at an Italian art or music institution. Turkish citizenship and residence outside Italy are the base conditions. AFAM assessment reads the artistic talent and the portfolio beside the academic file — so present the work, the performances or the design samples strongly; in music an audition (audizione) can be wanted besides. The portfolio and the artistic assessment

What sets AFAM applications apart from the universities’ is the artistic assessment. For fine arts and design, a strong, carefully chosen portfolio decides; for music, the repertoire and the audition; for the performing arts, the performance recording. Preparing the material, read the target institution’s and department’s expectations — they shape the application in the right direction; and let the portfolio carry not the technique alone but the artistic identity and its growth. Beside the artistic material sit the academic documents (diploma, transcript) and their sworn translations.

The language and the documents

Most AFAM programmes run in Italian, so an Italian level (frequently B1–B2) is generally expected; some programmes run in English. Beside the language certificate, the core file holds the diploma and transcript’s apostille and sworn translation, the identity documents and the portfolio/audition material — with CIMEA or the DoV stepping in where the degree’s recognition is needed. The translations planned early buy the practical time the artistic preparation deserves.

Which AFAM institutions?

The system spans a wide range: the fine-arts academies in painting, sculpture, stage design, new media and restoration; the state conservatoires across classical and modern music; the ISIA schools in industrial and communication design; the national dance and theatre academies in the performing arts. Many carry long histories and international standing. Which fits you follows your field and your artistic goal — before applying, read the target institution’s programme structure, teaching language and entry conditions, and the choice comes right.

The calendar and the audition

AFAM applications run on a calendar much like the universities’ — with the artistic assessment adding its own time. The audition in music, the portfolio review in fine arts, the project presentation in design each decide the process, run sometimes online and sometimes in person. The material taking time to prepare, plan the calendar early and note the deadlines separately — the MAECI call’s and the institution’s own. Early preparation lifts the material’s quality and heads off the last-minute scramble together.

University or AFAM?

Wanting art, music or design in Italy sometimes means choosing between the university and AFAM. The AFAM institutions teach practice-first — studio-based, centred on artistic production; the universities’ related departments (art history, architecture, design among them) can run more theoretical or academic. Mastery of the artistic practice the goal: AFAM fits; the field studied academically: the university. In some fields the two interleave. Decide on the artistic and professional goal — and compare both roads’ programme structures before applying.

What makes an Italian art education unique is the country itself — an open-air museum. Florence, Rome, Venice and Milan hold art history’s most important works and a living contemporary scene together; for an art student the world outside the classroom is a continuous source of learning and of inspiration.
