What lies beyond the base grant?

The Erasmus+ grant pays a base monthly allowance for the mobility period — and the programme adds supports on top: the “green travel” contribution encouraging environmentally friendly journeys, the additional allowance for economically disadvantaged students, and in some cases contributions to the travel costs. The supports exist to lighten the mobility’s financial load and keep the programme inclusive. Which apply to you follows your situation and your own university’s rules — so research the top-ups as you plan the grant, and let no entitlement slip.

What is green travel?

To encourage sustainability, Erasmus+ runs the “green travel” arrangement: journey to your mobility destination by train, coach or shared transport rather than flying, and an additional travel contribution and/or extra supported travel days can follow. The practice aims to cut the environmental impact and steer students towards the sustainable choices at once; the exact conditions and amounts follow your own university’s implementation. Planning the journey to Italy, weigh the environmentally friendly route — a contribution to the environment and a top-up both.

The support for disadvantaged students

To keep the programme reachable for everyone, Erasmus+ provides additional support for economically or otherwise disadvantaged students: extra allowance or special arrangements for low-income students, students with disabilities and participants with particular needs. The aim: no financial or physical barrier limiting the participation. Drawing on the support means declaring your situation to your own university’s Erasmus office and presenting the required documents. The inclusion support is a serious part of what keeps the Erasmus+ experience open to the wider student body — entitled, apply without fail.

How do you claim the top-ups?

Most of the top-ups are not automatic — they must be claimed, and documented where required: the transport documented for green travel, the situation proven for the disadvantage support. As you prepare the mobility, learn from your own Erasmus office which top-ups you qualify for and file the claims on time; keep the documents orderly and miss no deadline. The top-ups joined to the base grant raise the mobility’s total financial worth — counting them is the budget planned right.

Notes for Turkish students

For students travelling from Turkey to Italy on Erasmus, the top-ups can visibly ease the budget: the travel and green-travel supports gain weight over a journey this long, and the economic-disadvantage support is a serious contribution for the students who qualify. The online language support (OLS)

Erasmus+ participants generally receive online language support (OLS) — online courses and level assessments in the mobility language, Italian (or English) included, usable before and during the mobility. Not money in hand, but a valuable provision that raises the term’s academic and social yield: the free resource used is the Italian growing, in the classroom and the daily life both. Use it, and the experience runs richer.

Insurance and the practicalities

For the Erasmus term, the health insurance and the administrative work need arranging in advance: the European health cards or the private insurance options secure the health needs in Italy, and the longer stays can bring residence formalities besides. Not top-ups, these — but not to be neglected either, if the mobility is to run clean. Your own university’s Erasmus office guides on which insurance and administrative steps apply; completed on time, they are the smooth landing in Italy.

Budget planning

The grant and the top-ups contribute seriously — but rarely cover everything; some personal budget still wants planning. Italy’s costs swing by city, the housing the biggest line. Draw a realistic budget from the grant, the top-ups and any personal resources together, and set aside a starting fund against the grant’s first payment landing after you’ve settled. A good budget plan is the Erasmus term lived without financial worry — and the experience taken in full.

The registration and payment calendar

The Erasmus grant generally pays in instalments — the first at the mobility’s start, the remainder at term’s end or once the papers are complete. Learn the payment calendar from your own university and plan the budget around it; and note the grant’s full payment hangs on the end-of-term documents — the certificate of attendance, the transcript — submitted on time.
