The basic difference: income or merit?

The most fundamental difference is the assessment criterion. The regional DSU grants look chiefly at family income (ISEE) — designed for students under the income threshold. The universities’ merit awards rest on academic performance (grade average, the file) and can be awarded regardless of income. DSU, in short, serves the low-income student; the university award serves the academically strong one. The distinction largely settles which suits you: some students fit only one, some fit both — and reading your own profile honestly is the first step in choosing the right channel.

Coverage and support in kind

The two differ in coverage as well. DSU brings not just cash but support in kind — halls (residenza) and the canteen (mensa) — cutting the biggest cost lines, housing and food. University merit awards usually take the form of a tuition waiver and/or a cash allowance, often with nothing in kind. DSU’s coverage can therefore run broader, on housing above all; the university award is strongest at removing the fee burden and rewarding academic merit. How the application processes differ

The two application experiences part ways too. The DSU application goes to your region’s student-welfare agency portal, with the income document (ISEE Parificato) at its centre — independent of the university, and mostly possible before final enrolment. The university merit award runs through the university’s own process: sometimes assessed automatically with the programme application, sometimes on a separate form, and always resting on the academic file. DSU means building an income file; the university award an academic one. With different counterparts and requirements, applying to both means planning the two processes separately — while the shared documents (the diploma–transcript translation) serve you in each.

The timing difference

The calendars can differ as well. DSU applications open in most regions from summer into autumn; the university awards’ calendars track the programme — sometimes alongside the departmental application, sometimes before or after it. Applying to both, gather the calendars into one table and see the clashes and deadlines plainly. Preparing the documents against the earliest deadline is what keeps every application alive. Managing two calendars at once takes attention; early planning is the key to catching both opportunities on time.

A few cases sharpen the choice. A low-income bachelor’s student: DSU is the primary channel (no MAECI at this level; a university award can supplement).
