What is pre-enrolment?

Pre-enrolment — “pre-iscrizione” in Italian — is the official step that visa-requiring international students must complete before applying for the student visa. Through it you formally declare the university and programme you intend to study at in Italy, and the declaration feeds the consulate’s visa process. It runs through the Universitaly portal on a calendar set each year. Pre-enrolment is neither a formal admission nor a final registration — only the preliminary step the visa requires; admission and registration are separate processes. Understanding it correctly is what lets you start the visa process at the right moment.

Why is it required?

To issue a student visa, the Italian consulate wants to see that the applicant has genuinely been admitted to — or is in the admission process of — an Italian programme. Pre-enrolment supplies that officially: it declares which university and programme you’ve applied to, and passes the declaration to the consulate. Without it, a visa application generally cannot be made — which makes pre-enrolment the mandatory preliminary of the visa process, and a fundamental procedure for every student entering Italy on a visa. Completing it on time is the key to starting the visa application without delay.

How is it done?

Pre-enrolment runs through Universitaly: register an account, launch the pre-enrolment, select your chosen university and programme, enter your personal and academic details and upload the required documents. Pre-enrolment and the visa: the order

Understanding the correct sequence matters: first you apply to the programme — or enter its admission process; then (or in parallel) you pre-enrol through Universitaly; then, with the pre-enrolment, you apply for the student visa; and once the visa is granted you travel to Italy and complete final registration. Pre-enrolment sits at the chain’s centre — the bridge step to the visa. The calendar and the quotas

Pre-enrolment opens on a set period each year, and some programmes carry quota limits. Learn the calendar early and act promptly when the window opens: on quota-limited programmes, a late pre-enrolment can cost you the place.
