What are the PNRR doctorates?

The PNRR (the National Recovery and Resilience Plan) is Italy’s great investment programme backed by European funds, with serious resources for education and research. Under it, a large number of funded doctoral positions opened beyond the standard ones — generally pointed at defined thematic priorities (the green transition, digitalisation, health, sustainability), some carrying an industry partnership or a compulsory research period abroad. Where does the money come from?

The PNRR positions are funded from the resources Italy receives under the EU’s recovery and resilience mechanism, distributed to the universities and research institutions by the country’s development priorities. The positions are financed, in other words, not from the standard university budget but from this special programme — which is what generally brings the thematic and temporal conditions with it.
