The Italy University Application Document Checklist

When applying to university in Italy, which documents are needed and how to prepare them is the question students ask most. In this post we set out a comprehensive application-document checklist and a preparation guide.

The core academic documents

The heart of every Italy university application is the diploma (or a provisional graduation certificate) and the transcript. These must be apostilled and sworn-translated into Italian (into English for some programmes). The degree-recognition document

Alongside the academic documents, most universities want a document showing your degree is recognised: a CIMEA report or a Dichiarazione di Valore (DoV) from the consulate. Which is needed varies by university. This document shows what your degree corresponds to in the Italian system and completes the academic side of your application. The language-proficiency certificate

Italian-taught programmes generally want a B2-level Italian certificate (CILS, CELI or PLIDA), English-taught ones IELTS or TOEFL. Watch the validity period of the certificate; an expired one is not accepted. Meeting the language condition before applying is one of the most critical steps of the process. Check in advance the level and the accepted exam types the programme wants. The language certificate proves you are proficient in the language of instruction.

Identity and passport

A valid passport is needed for the application and the later visa process. The spelling of your name in the passport must be consistent with all your other documents (diploma, translation, recognition). With Turkish-character names this consistency is especially important. Additional documents

Depending on the programme, additional documents may be wanted: a motivation letter, a CV, reference letters, a portfolio (for art/design programmes) and, in some programmes, an entrance-exam result.
